R3DIMENSION IDENTITY – Frequently Asked Questions
Technical answers to some of the most common questions about R3DIMENSION IDENTITY, our industrial large-format IDEX 3D printer.
Who is IDENTITY designed for?
IDENTITY is designed for professional and industrial users who need to manufacture large functional parts, prototypes or production components using engineering-grade thermoplastics.
It has a build volume of 1120 x 720 x 620 mm.
Its large build volume reduces the need to split large components into smaller parts.
- Large functional prototypes
- Jigs and fixtures
- Automotive components
- Molds and tooling
- Low-volume production
- Large technical components
- Parts requiring support materials
- Series production using IDEX Copy Mode
IDENTITY is especially suitable for companies that need filament-based FDM manufacturing with a large build volume, a controlled thermal environment and independent dual extrusion.
What materials can IDENTITY print?
IDENTITY uses an open 1.75 mm filament system.
It can process materials such as ABS, ASA, PETG, PLA, PA, Nylon and TPU.
IDENTITY uses hotends capable of reaching 500 C, a heated bed up to 120 C and an insulated build chamber operating at approximately 55 C.
It can also process engineering and reinforced thermoplastics when they are compatible with the extrusion system and nozzle configuration.
Thanks to its two independent extruders, IDENTITY can combine a structural material with a dedicated support material.
Depending on the application, materials such as HIPS or BVOH can be used for support structures.
Material compatibility depends on the specific material grade, manufacturer recommendations, nozzle configuration and the mechanical requirements of the application.
Can IDENTITY print ABS parts over 1 metre?
Yes. IDENTITY can print ABS parts longer than one metre in a single piece, provided that the geometry fits within its 1120 x 720 x 620 mm build volume.
This allows parts up to 1120 mm long to be manufactured without having to divide them into several sections simply because of the printer size.
Printing ABS at this scale requires good thermal control because the material contracts as it cools and large parts are more sensitive to warping and internal stresses.
IDENTITY uses a fully insulated build chamber operating at approximately 55 C and a heated bed capable of reaching 120 C.
Its R3D Static print platform is designed to maintain a stable and flat printing surface during operation, which is especially important when manufacturing large parts.
The final printability of a large ABS component will also depend on its geometry, wall thickness, orientation, material grade and mechanical requirements.
How does the IDEX system work?
IDEX stands for Independent Dual Extruder.
IDENTITY uses two independently controlled printheads instead of mounting both nozzles on the same carriage.
This allows the machine to work in several different operating modes.
- Single Mode: one printhead manufactures the complete part.
- Copy Mode: both printheads manufacture the same component simultaneously.
- Mirror Mode: both printheads manufacture mirrored versions of the same component during the same production cycle.
- Multimaterial Mode: each printhead can use a different material, for example a structural thermoplastic and a dedicated support material.
Because the printheads move independently, the inactive nozzle can remain away from the printed component instead of passing over the part.
This is particularly useful in multimaterial printing and reduces some of the limitations associated with conventional dual-nozzle systems where both nozzles remain mechanically linked.
Each IDENTITY extruder can reach approximately 85 mm3/s of volumetric flow.
In Copy Mode, both extrusion systems can work simultaneously, providing a combined deposition capability of approximately 170 mm3/s.
What is the difference between IDENTITY and CUBE?
IDENTITY and CUBE are both industrial large-format IDEX 3D printers, but they are designed around different production priorities.
